Community Cancer Center History

Prior to 1980, radiation therapy was not readily available to cancer patients in this area. Roseburg residents had to travel substantial distances each day or secure lodging away from home in order to receive radiation treatments. This created a financial and physical hardship for many seriously ill individuals. Recognizing the need, a group of 30 community leaders decided to do something for the cancer victims in their own hometown. Their efforts resulted in the creation of the Community Cancer Foundation. The Community Cancer Foundation is a private, not-for-profit, community-owned organization with a voluntary Board of Directors whose members serve without pay.

In December of 1980, the Community Cancer Foundation opened the doors of the newly constructed Community Cancer Center (CCC). The Community Cancer Center is a freestanding, not-for-profit radiation therapy facility operating under the authority and direction of the Foundation. For over two decades, the CCC has provided thousands of area residents with the means to receive radiation therapy treatments close to home in a modern, safe, and friendly environment.

The Community Cancer Center in Roseburg, Oregon is the only radiation Therapy facility in the state of Oregon to receive accreditation from the American College of Radiology.

What does this mean for the people of Roseburg?

This accreditation is only awarded to organizations that meet their very high criteria and have an on-site inspection/review by a team of radiation oncologists and medical physicists. Their reports are then reviewed by a panel of experts who can make a recommendation for accreditation. We underwent such a review in March 2005, and were accredited for the maximum period awarded (3 years).
